Catacombe dei Cappuccini-
Palermo, Sicily

In the 17th century the Capuchin monastery’s cemetery exceeded it’s capacity, so crypts were excavated for the deceased friars to rest. In later centuries it became a status symbol to be entombed there, so in their wills local luminaries would ask to be preserved in certain clothes, or even to have their clothes changed at regular intervals.

The catacombs contain about 8000 mummies that line the walls. The halls are divided into categories: Men, Women, Virgins, Children, Priests, Monks, and Professionals.

What if verbal abuse left the same scars as physical abuse? Would it be taken more seriously? That’s what photographer Richard Johnson hopes to accomplish with his new photo project, “Weapons of Choice.”

The series uses a makeup artist to put bruises and scars on photo subjects. Embedded in these violent marks are some hateful words typically associated with abuse, such as “Stupid,” “Dumb,” “Trash” and others that are much, much worse.
